Sebastião Salgado Exhibition in Milan: Kuwait

"The war ended just thirty days before, and the desert was covered with oil: the sun was obscured by dark smoke, while large columns of crude was rising to the sky before falling to the ground and forming dense black lakes as molasses exploding without notice in hell of fire.
[...] They move like ghosts in the darkness, too close to the danger to think of nothing but the work they were engaged in. It needed experience, improvisational ability, discipline, solidarity, and immense physical and mental strength. For me, they were the real heroes of the First Gulf War. And they were also a source of inspiration for these photographs. "
